+## What is this
+
+We live in a society. Actual 1984. It's not uncommon for software to be pulled from the internet
+due to various reasons, rogue maintainers, hacking, legal threats from big scary companies, etc.
+This tool makes it easier for us to keep archives and backups of git repositories we care about,
+and to protect against things like mass deletion of bug tracker entries, forcepushing deletion of
+git history, etc. It is intended to be used together with something like `cgit`, but can also be
+used just as a normal backup tool.
